Rex, the shiba inu found taped to a refrigerator in April, will be officially adopted Saturday and is getting a new name.
New names for Rex
BOULDER, Colo. — Rex, the Boulder dog that was bound and taped to a fridge in April, is getting a new start and a new name.
The shiba inu will be officially adopted by a new family Saturday, and his new owners -- Amy and Shannon Park, both 36, of Castle Rock -- want the public's help renaming him.
"There has been so much public support," Amy Park said Tuesday. "There are blogs and Web pages and even a Facebook support group for him, so we wanted people to have a part in his new beginning."
For a suggested donation of $5, anyone can vote online for one of five names, all based on the shiba inu's Japanese heritage: Yoshi, Kichiro, Toshi, Saburo and Kazuki.
The contest, which has Yoshi leading so far, has raised more than $500 for the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
Police responding to a domestic dispute April 14 found Rex wrapped in packaging tape and stuck upside-down to a fridge inside a Boulder apartment. His owner's girlfriend, Abby Toll, 20, was charged with felony animal cruelty.
The owner, Bryan Beck, 21, was ticketed on suspicion of misdemeanor cruelty and surrendered Rex and another dog, a Chihuahua named Peanut.
Peanut also has a new home, according to Humane Society officials.
The Parks took Rex on a trial basis April 16 to make sure he fit in with their three other shiba inus: Rocky, 12, Sakura, 6, and Snickers, 3.
"He wasn't socialized properly; he was sort of a social moron," Amy Park said. "But he's doing really good now."
Park said she and her husband are working with a "doggie trainer psychologist" to make sure Rex continues to integrate well into his new life. At first, she said, he demonstrated some behavior indicative of his abuse.
"We noticed he was very scared of people," she said. "And he was having nightmares. It was really sad. He would wake up in the night shrieking."
Rex didn't answer to his name, which is why the Parks decided he needed a new one.
"We refuse to call him Rex because that's associated with his horrible past," Amy Park said. "We have been calling him Baby or Little Buddy."
Lisa Pedersen, chief executive officer for the Humane Society, said she was thrilled when the Parks came to her with the idea of a naming contest that could solicit donations for other animals in need.
"This is a great ending to a horrible story," she said.

Accused animal abuser OK to live with mother, dog in Chicago
Abby Toll
Abby Toll, the woman who allegedly taped the Shiba inu, Rex, to her refrigerator is allowed to leave the state to head to Chicago. There, she will live with her mother and her mother’s dog. There is no report as to whether the mother is going to leave her dog alone with Toll; I certainly hope not.
Toll’s boyfriend/punching bag, Bryan Beck has a court appointment on Thursday for a pre-trial conference. No word on whether he has obliging relatives with pets.
